Niwata Shigechika (1495-1533) was born the second son of Nakayama Nobuchika (1458-1517) but was adopted by Niwata Shigetsune (1465-1501). As an adult, he smoothly advanced to Senior Third Rank, Provisional Middle Counselor. In 1533, he visited Nara, where he played the flute during the music and dance dedication to Kasuga Shrine; however, he is recorded to have suddenly taken ill and died the next morning. He was only 39 at the time of death. The genealogy of calligraphy lists Shigechika under the GoKashiwabara-In School. However, “Ship before the Moon” shows strokes that were fashionable during his time, rather than the characteristic features of GoKashiwabara-In, and it is likely the poem was written in the author’s youth. “In Search of the Bloom”, on the other hand, exhibits brushwork of varying intensity, proof that the writer had acquired the style of the aforementioned school. Perhaps this piece was written in the prime of Shigechika’s life. This poem title was written by a different hand.

Ship before the Moon: Sailing into the moonlit waves, I saw a little fishing boat. Do not tell others I’m here to view the night sky, to have the moon to myself.Reminiscence: Years idle away, just like writing numbers on a water flow. How can I stop them?
