Hojo Ujimasa (1538-90) was a military general of the Warring Era. Born the first son of Hojo Ujiyasu (1515-71), he became the fourth head of the Hojo Family of Odawara. In 1560, he succeeded his father to become ruler of the domain, and tried to bring the Kanto area under his control. In his quest for military expansion, he joined the army of Oda Nobunaga (in 1582) in the latter’s campaign against the Takedas of Kai Province (Yamanashi Prefecture), and defeated General Takeda Katsuyori. Eight years later, Ujimasa was defeated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s expeditions aimed at the unification of the nation. When the besieged Odawara Castle was forced open by the enemy, Ujimasa killed himself. Although a military general, Ujimasa was a cultured man who studied painting under artist Kanou Gyokuraku and had a talent for waka composition. His calligraphy belongs to the Sonchin School, developed by Prince Sonchin (1504-50) as an offshoot of the Shoren-In School. One can see a style typical of an aristocrat, rather than a warlord.

Fallen Leaves: Let’s not bemoan the fallen leaves. Better they fall now than remain on the trees after turning red and gold.
