契沖〈けいちゅう・1640-1701〉は、江戸初期の国学者。摂津国尼崎（兵庫県尼崎市）の武家の出身。俗姓は下川氏。契沖は法号。幼少より聡明で向学心があり、11歳で出家、13歳で高野山に登り、後に24歳で阿闍梨位を得るに至った。また、歌人、古典の研究家として著名である。従来の伝授的手法を排し、文献的に徹底した実証主義は古典研究に期を画した。とりわけ、『万葉集』の研究業績は高く評価される。契沖の書は本来、特徴のあるとげとげしい筆致であるが、この短冊ではむしろ伸びやかな筆の動きをみせている。
