Sanjo Saneka (1469-1559) was the son of Minister of the Right Sanjo Kin-atsu. He advanced smoothly to Provisional Middle Counselor, Major Counselor, and to Minister of the Center by age 39, Minister of the Right at 49, then Minister of the Left (1518), ultimately reaching the highest administrative post of Chancellor at age 67 (1535). Two years later, Sanjo Saneka turned to Buddhism and adopted the religious name of Teiku. The slow and steady flow of the exhibited brushstroke shows the twist he added to the Sanjo School of calligraphic style.
