On New Year’s Day in 1354, Shogun Ashikaga Takauji (1305-1358) made a vow to create manuscripts (hand-copies) of the Daizokyo Sutra (complete collection of Buddhist scriptures). He made this vow as a votive offering to pacify the souls of Emperor GoDaigo (1288-1339), his own parents and all the people, both friends and foes, who fell in and after the Genko Civil War (1331). This grandiose undertaking was also a prayer for a peaceful and safe nation and the general well-being of his people. Later, the manuscripts came to be known as the “Sutra Manuscripts Invoked by Ashikaga Takauji.” The exact wording of the above vow is recorded on a woodblock print attached at the back of the manuscripts. However, only the signature was authentically written by Takauji. Many monks serving at major temples in Kyoto, Nara and Kamakura were commissioned for this task of hand-copying the entire Buddhist scriptures. The completed manuscripts were blessed at the Toji-In Temple in Kyoto on December 23, about a year after Takauji’s vow. The original 500-plus scrolls were supposedly dedicated to the Toji-In. However, upon strong requests from the priests of the Onjoji Temple in Shiga (today’s Shiga Prefecture), the entire scrolls were sent and consecrated at this temple. Only 592 pages have survived to this day, as many pages were fragmented and taken out of the temple. The Nezu Museum in Tokyo preserves 36 sheets, and the National Museum (Tokyo) has custody of another 8 sheets. The exhibit shows the top page from Volume 1 of the 10-volume Aggannasutta Sutra (Jp: Kise Inpongyo), written by Monk Seigen of Daikaki-Ji Temple. The visible edits were also made by the same writer.
