Emperor GoKashiwabara (1464-1526) was born the first prince of Emperor GoTsuchimikado (1442-1500) and held the throne between 1500 and 1526 as the 104th emperor (Jp. “tenno”) of Japan. With the Onin War (1467-77) raging in the capital, ceremonies for the 37-year-old emperor’s enthronement were postponed for 20 years, until 1521 when the finances of the imperial household recovered. Donations raised by Archbishop Jitsunyo (1458-1525), the 9th archbishop of Honganji Temple, contributed greatly, and Emperor GoKashiwabara exerted tremendous effort to restore imperial authority undermined by the war and reinstate traditional formalities and ceremonies. Academically inclined and well-trained in music and poetry, the emperor left behind a collection of poems titled Hakugyoku-Shu (lit. “Collection of Oak Gems”; “kashiwa” in the emperor’s name means “oak.”) A skilled calligrapher, Emperor GoKashiwabara was admired also as the originator of the GoKashiwabara-In School, patterned after the Shoren-In School (also known as the Son-en School). This characteristic style later was preserved by avid royal followers such as Emperor GoNara (1496-1557), Emperor Ohgimachi (1517-93), and Prince Kunitaka (1456-1532).Ancient etiquette dictated that reigning emperors never sign their kaishi or tanzaku, which explains the lack of signature on this kaishi. However, there is no doubt that it was written by Emperor GoKashiwabara, by comparing the brushwork with earlier ones written and signed while he was Crown Prince. Despite the slow and dignified way the brush moves, soaked with abundant ink, the overall impression is a gentle Japanese style, which may also reflect the laid-back attitude he had.
