草書体で『般若心経』（正式には『般若波羅蜜多心経』）を書写する。この経典は、甚大な般若経典の内容を圧縮し、般若・皆空の精神をあらわした簡潔なもので、数ある経典の中で一番短い経典である。内容は、「色即是空（自己をも含むすべての存在には永遠不変の固定的実体はない）」で知られるように、一切存在の空なることを説き、それらに執着しないことを強調している。個人的な発願による写経、あるいは数量を誇ることに写経功徳を願う供養（たとえば千巻経）において、必然的に短い経典が選ばれた。この独得な草書体の写経は、類のない特異な存在である。巻末に「沙門空海」と書いて、この筆者を空海〈くうかい・774-835〉とするのは、後世の弘法大師信仰の中に生まれたもので、その筆に仮託することによる。おそらく日課として書写した「日課心経」であったであろう。１字１字が鼠の足跡に似るところから、「鼠心経」と俗称される。書写年代は、大師信仰が流布した鎌倉後期のころと推定するのが、今日の定説である。
