狩野尚信〈かのうなおのぶ・1607-50〉は、江戸時代前期の画家。狩野孝信〈たかのぶ・1571-1618〉の次男として京都に生まれる。探幽〈たんゆう・1602-74〉の弟。寛永７年〈1630〉、江戸に下り幕府の御用絵師となる。邸を木挽町（現在の銀座８丁目昭和通り付近）に下賜され、そこに居住して子孫が相伝したため、「木挽町狩野」の祖と呼ばれる。二条城・知恩院の障壁画にも尚信の制作があるとされ、代表作「瀟湘八景図屏風」（東京国立博物館蔵）など、かずかずの大作を残す。柳營のほか、禁裏や京都の諸寺院などにも彩管を揮った。この懐紙は、遺例の少ない尚信の筆跡。書状のほかに、懐紙は全く稀有の存在。歌題から推して、柳營、すなわち将軍家光の、新年御会の詠進であろうか。この枯淡の筆致は、晩年40代のころの筆と見る。位署の「狩野藤原」も珍しい。「「霞、春光を添う」ということを詠める倭歌／狩野藤原尚信／山葛暁かけてくる春の光や空に霞み初むらむ」
