An aristocrat of the early Edo Period, Horikawa Yasutane (1592-1673) was the son of Director of the Left Minase Chikatomo and the grandson of Provisional Major Counselor Takakura Nagayie. However, inheriting the family name and estate of neither his father nor his grandfather, Yasutane chose to establish his own lineage, i.e., the Horikawa family. In 1663, Yasutane was appointed Provisional Middle Counselor, but he resigned from this office soon afterward to live in pursuit of the Buddhist discipline and adopted the name “Kyuzan” (lit. resting mountain).The letter reads like this: “I have humbly accepted the order to write poems on sensu folding fans. This commission is way beyond my ability; however, I have finished writing on two sensu. I am rather embarrassed by the poor result, and therefore, will not write any more, if you allow.” This letter serves as evidence of Yasutane’s unaffected and humble manner--perhaps too humble in light of the powerful and confident style of his brushworkexhibited here. The letter is addressed to Imperial Guard Lord Sono, who was Sono Motonari (1604-55). In 1618, Motonari was appointed Director General of the Imperial Guard of the Left, and was promoted to General of the Imperial Guard of the Right in 1626.
