瑜伽（ゆが＝ヨーガyoga）は解脱・悟りに向けて正しい見方を得るための瞑想や精神統一の実践をいう。ヨーガを通じ、自己の心のあり方を変革することによって悟りに到達しようとする教えを説く、唯識を唱導する学派・瑜伽行派（ゆがぎょうはYogacara school）の根本経典。玄奘〈げんじょう・602-664〉訳の100巻本が代表的なものである。わが国では、南都仏教の主流であった法相宗が唯識派を奉じたため、興福寺・元興寺・法隆寺・薬師寺などを中心にこの経典の書写が行われた。わが国でも奈良時代において、しばしば写されている。天平２年〈730〉２月10日、飛鳥寺僧賢澄（けんちょう）によって写されたもの（石山寺蔵）をはじめ、京都の知恩院、滋賀の石山寺などにまとまったものが残っている。が、これは、それらとは書風の異なるもので、別に書写された中の一巻であろう。巻末に、「天平四年歳次壬申年岡本臣麿」の二行がみられるが、これは本文（経文）とは別筆。吉川弘文館刊の『日本古代人名辞典』（巻第２・420ページ）は、「岡本臣麻呂」の名を掲げ、この経の奥書の記載を採用している。『良訓備忘録』を出典とする。筆跡からみて、奈良・天平時代の写経に間違いない。表紙の装丁（後補）から、室町時代の貴族の信仰として愛玩されたものか。
