Minase Ujinari (1571-1644) was the son of Provisional Middle Counselor Kanenari and was promoted to the same position in 1626, but he retired from the office in 1642 to live as a Buddhist monk. He adopted a Buddhist name of Zeku and was also an acclaimed poet. Ujinari thanks the recipient of this letter for the feast the previous night but confesses that he drank too much and is still feeling tipsy. He also comments on how graceful the dances were rendered by the imperial princes. As the letter is signed “Middle Counselor Minase,” it was written when Ujinari was between the ages of 56 and 72, and thus is an example of his calligraphic hand in his later years.
