The Dai-Hannyakyo Sutra is the generic term given to the 600 volumes of Buddhist scriptures called the Sutra of the Great Perfection of Wisdom (Skt. Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra, Jp. Hannya Haramitsu or Hannya Haramitta) and is the most authoritative of all the sacred books of Buddhism. The Chinese translation was rendered by Priest Genjo (Ch. Xuanzang, d. 664) who made a great pilgrimage to India in search of scriptures. Just as in the transcribing of the Lotus Sutra, it was widely believed that the very act of copying the Hannyakyo Sutra was sacred and that practitioners of the art benefited from divine intervention. Therefore, the Hannya Sutra was copied frequently throughout the Nara, Heian, and Kamakura periods. The exhibited manuscript is a volume that originally belonged to Section I of the 600-volume Dai-Hannyakyo, which had traditionally been preserved at Yakushi-Ji Temple (in today’s Nara Prefecture). On the overleaf, one can see the circular emblem for “Yakushi-Ji”, hence, the name of this manuscript is the Yakushi-Ji Sutra. This manuscript is attributed to master calligrapher Asano-no-Nakai, but probably was written by a dozen calligraphers, due to the differentiated writing styles. Among the “Issaikyo Sutra of Manuscript Made at the Votive Wish of Empress Shotoku” (made in 768) are areas of writing which show similar calligraphic styles, and as such, the exhibited segment is considered to have been produced at the same Bureau of Sutra Transcription around the same time, during the latter Nara Period (ca. 770).
