Madeno-koji Tokifusa (1394-1457) was a court noble during the early Muromachi Period. His Buddhist name is Kensei-in. At age 18, he became the fifth-ranked chamberlain (kuroud) under Emperor Gokomatsu. At age 21, he became head chamberlain (kuroudo-no-to) and sadaiben, a central administrative position. At age 23, Tokifusa was promoted to consultant and then in 1425, he became Provisional Major Counselor (Gon -Dainagon) to take charge of buke-tenso and nanto-tenso. The latter are high-ranking offices served by nobility and were immediately below the position of regent. (Buke-tenso was an office for relaying military matters to the emperor or retired emperor.) At age 43, Tokihusa became the Minister of the Center(Naidaijin). He kept a diary between 1414 and 1455, which was named Kennaiki (Kensei-in Naidaijin’s diary) with vivid accounts of noble households during the Muromachi Period. A few pages are missing, but this journal is an important historical document. When Emperor Gohanazono (1419-70) was to receive the coming-of-age ceremony on the 3rd of the new year 1433, an imperial order was received by the court wardrobe department. In this letter, Tokifusa writes to a Sahyoe-Gonza, who is most likely to be Takakura Hidetoyo (1407-78) because order-made attire for important imperial and aristocratic events was an exclusive family business for the Takakura House. Tokifusa urges the recipient to quickly take measurements for the young emperor’s costume and report them back to him. Emperor Gohanazono was born to Prince Fushimi-no-miya Sadafusa as Prince Hikohito. After Emperor Shoko died of illness, Retired Emperor Gokomatsu adopted Prince Hikohito to be his successor. In 1428, the latter ascended the throne to become Emperor Gohanazono when the young prince was only 10. So it was five years later that he celebrated the coming-of-age ceremony. This letter was written on November 10 of the previous year, when Tokifusa was 39 years old.
