Serving as governor of Matsue in Izumo Province (today’s Shimane Prefecture), Matsudaira Fumai (1751-1818) was a daimyo (a warrior administrator of a domain) who was also dedicated to the art of tea. He was born the second son of his predecessor, Lord Matsudaira Munenobu (1729-82), but became the heir as his older brother died young. Fumai, originally named Haruyoshi and later Harusato, followed the Sekishu School of tea, eventually originating his own style, the Fumai School, by elaborating on Sekishu. In 1769, Lord Matsudaira went to practice Zen under Priest Daiten Soseki (1735-98) of Tenshinji in Azabu, Edo. In the third year of training, he was given the Buddhist name “Fumai.” Lord Matsudaira was a noted collector of priceless tea utensils, such as the “Nagare Engo” (Tokyo National Museum) and “Aburaya Katatsuki” (Hatakeyama Memorial Museum of Fine Art), and even wrote a book cataloguing famous and sought-after tea utensils, titled Kokon Meibutsu Ruiju (lit. Collection of Ancient and Modern Famous Tea Utensils). Fumai was also a renowned calligrapher. In his late teens, he was attracted to the Teika School and developed a passion for Kobori Enshu (1579-1647). This letter actually exhibits the Enshu style that he mastered. Just as in many of his other extant brushworks, the script is unrestricted, merry and yet of the characteristic form favored by tea connoisseurs. This letter describes the arrangement of tea utensils exhibited at a tea party in which Fumai served freshly harvested tea and sheds light on Fumai’s expertise in tea and tea-ware.
