The letter in hiragana shown is shihai-monjo, or writing on waste paper, It was written on the back of the paper originally used to transcribe the Five Buddhist Texts that have been preserved at Kozanji Temple in Togano-o, Kyoto. The transcription was made by Konoe Kanenori (1267-1336), a courtier aristocrat of the late Kamakura Period who recycled whatever used paper he had to make scrolls of transcribed Buddhist scriptures. As time passed, the shihai-monjo including this letter became more revered among connoisseurs of calligraphy, resulting in the severing of the original letter into fragments. The shihai-monjo includes a letter written by Kanenori’s younger sister, Konoe Noriko (1162-96), also known as Lady Shin Yomeimon (Junior Consort of Emperor Kameyama). Together, they form important calligraphic documents of the late Kamakura Period, conveying the characteristics of the hiragana letter style.The paper is beautifully decorated with gold and silver dust, which is further decorated with multi-sized gold foils on the top layer. On the paper’s right-hand side appear patterns of clouds and a sandy beach, pattered with gold and silver dust. The use of powdered precious metals to symbolize some natural object is based on aristocratic aesthetic tradition.Even though the original writer of the letter is not clear, the free-flowing hand and the elegant and warm effect it creates exemplify the aristocratic calligraphy style of the 13th through 14th centuries.
