Kuwayama Sosen (1560-1632) was a tea connoisseur of the early Edo Period. He was the son of Kuwayama Shigeharu (1524-1606) and was sometimes called Sadaharu and Shigenaga, but in his later years, he assumed the pseudonym To-un. Sosen was his Buddhist name.Sosen served all of the most powerful warlords of the era, namely Toyotomi Hidenaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and later Tokugawa Ieyasu. He studied chanoyu (sado, tea ceremony) from Sen-no-Doan (1546-1632), the son of Sen-no-Rikyu (1522-91) , and though his tea style is not clearly recorded, it is said that he closely followed Rikyu’s style, as conveyed by Sosen’s son, the tea master Do-an. In fact, one famous disciple of the Sosen School was Katagiri Sekishu (1605-73).This is a thank-you letter for the gift of an incense burner that Sosen was given for Tango-no-Sekku (Boys’ Festival; Iris Festival), held on May 5th. The burner was probably given in light of the custom of hanging small silk bags of fragrance in rooms as air fresheners. Sosen adds that he is enjoying good health.
