A military general of the early Edo Period, Koide Yoshihide (1587-1666) was the governor of Izushi in Tajima Province (today’s Hyogo Prefecture). He was officially sworn in as Lord of Izushi Castle in 1604, when his father was transferred to Kishiwada in Izumi Province (today’s Osaka). During the Winter Battle of Osaka, Yoshihide joined the Eastern Forces, and, during the Summer Battle of Osaka, he fought against General Ohno Harufusa and safeguarded Kishiwada Castle. Both in 1633 and 1637, Yoshihide was ordered to take charge of Matsue Castle in Izumo Province (today’s eastern Shimane Prefecture). He died in 1666 at age 80.Yoshihide sent this letter to Kato Akitomo (1621-83), a warlord who had been given a fief of 10,000 goku (rice bales) in Iwami Province (today’s western Shimane) in 1643. Yoshihide seems to have cultivated a friendship with Akitomo when he was stationed at Matsue Castle. Yoshihide replies that he has acknowledged the notice that the meeting with Lord Matsudaira Nobutsuna (1596-1662) is to be postponed until the following day. Although Yoshihide was a military general, he shows mastery in calligraphy.
