Fujiwara Seika (1561-1619) was a Confucian scholar during the early Edo Period. Born as the son of Reizei Tamezumi (1531-78), his family lineage can be traced all the way back to Fujiwara-no-Teika (also Sadaie, 1162-1241), the great literary figure of ancient Japan. Seika was the 12th-generation descendant of this famous family. As an adult, Seika became a Buddhist monk at Shokokuji Temple but later studied Chu-tzu doctrine, a new school of Confucianism, leading him to be hailed as the originator of modern Confucianism in Japan. He trained many famous disciples, including Hayashi Razan (1583-1657), who became the Confucian instructor for the Tokugawa military government; physician Hori Kyoan (1585-1642); and Matsunaga Sekigo (1592-1657); as well as other noted scholars.Seika’s calligraphy shows the strong influence of the Gozan (‘Five Sacred Mountains’) priests, whose style was based on the Chinese. The identity of the addressee ‘Mr. Karo’ is not clear, but he was perhaps Seika’s scholarly associate because it appears that he had asked Seika to clarify a question about a Chinese classic. Seika replies in this letter that they should both work together to resolve the problem. He ends the letter saying, as if in self-mockery, “What a fine day today, but I am a poverty-stricken scholar, and my life never seems to change.”
