A nobleman of the early Edo Period, Asukai Masaaki (1611-79) was born the third son of Asukai Masatsune (1569-1615) and was adopted by his elder brother Masanobu (1586-1651) to inherit the Asukai family name. Among the ranks of the court administration, Masaaki reached the post of Provisional Major Counselor. The Asukai family, originated by another Masatsune (1170-1221), was known for their professions, kemari (the way of playing a kickball) and waka writing. As the authority in all waka-related affairs, the Asukai family gradually replaced the so-far powerful Nijo and Reizei families. Masaaki was granted certification in the mastery of “Kokin Denju,” the oral teachings of decorum from Emperor Gomizunoo, passed down for generations. On the occasion of a poetry contest held at Sento Palace in 1648, Masaaki was one of the judges, a good example of the active roles that he played in the literary world. And in addition to assuming the office of Provisional Major Counselor, Masaaki was also a liaison officer between the military government and the imperial court. Moreover, As a thoroughly trained calligrapher, Masaaki represented the Asukai-style.This letter is addressed to Minister Councilor Takatsuji Toyonaga (1625-1702), who was councilor between 1675 and 77. In other words, this letter was written by Masaaki between the ages of 65 and 67. A thank-you letter for the gift of a writing brush, the script flows smoothly, with each letter taking up a style unique to Masaaki.
