Kazan-in Tadanaga (1588-1662) was the second son of Kazan-in Sadahiro (1558-1634), the Minister of the Left. He was promoted rapidly and, at barely 17 years of age, was appointed Director General of the Imperial Guard of the Left. However, when he was 22, a huge scandal broke out at the imperial palace. Several young noblemen, including Karasumaru Mitsuhiro, Ohimikado Yorikuri, Asukai Masakata, Namba Munekatsu (later changed name to Asukai Masanobu), Tokudaiji Sanehisa and Matsuki Munenobu, were arrested for engaging in indecent acts with five court ladies. Emperor Goyozei, who had been beset by deteriorating morals in the court, was resolute to rectify the situation, so he ordered the military government to severely punish the culprits. Kazanin Tadanaga was exiled to Matsumae in Ezo (today’s Hokkaido). His place of exile was later changed to Aomori, but it was not until 1636, when Tadanaga was aged 49, that he was finally pardoned. Thereafter, he lived in Musashino Province (today’s Saitama Prefecture), became a monk and called himself by the Buddhist name of Jo-oki (lit. pure hut). In 1652, his many years of yearning were fulfilled, and he returned to his homeland of Kyoto. Tadanaga died in 1662 at the age of 75. In the history of calligraphy, Tadanaga is attributed to the Konoe School, the traits of which are evident in this letter. Although the background of the letter is not easily understandable, there is a sentence that reads: “…the horses are ready for my trip to the capital.” Perhaps this letter was written after Tadanaga had been pardoned and allowed to return to Edo.
