Maeda Toshinaga (1562-1614) was Toshiyie (1537-99)’s first son born with Matsu (known as Hoshun-In; 1547-1617). With his father, Toshinaga served powerful military figures Oda Nobunaga (1534-82) and Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-98). In 1598, he became the head of the family and, in 1599, a member of Toyotomi Family’s Five Councilors. When Tokugawa Ieyasu plotted an invasion into Kaga (today’s Ishikawa Pref.), which was then under Toshinaga’s control, he sent his own mother to Edo as a voluntary hostage to seek reconciliation. In 1600, during the Battle of Sekigahara, Toshinaga fought on the Tokugawa side and made a name for himself in Kaga. He was rewarded with ownership of the provinces Kaga and Noto (today’s Ishikawa Pref.) and Ecchu (today’s Toyama Pref.). He retired in 1605. Toshinaga tolerated Christianity and was thoroughly trained in chanoyu tea ceremony as one of the high-ranking disciples of Sen-no-Rikyu.The salutatory closing, ‘kashiku,’ that is used here appears often in Toshinaga’s handwritten letters, and even though this letter is not signed, its authenticity cannot be questioned. On the occasion of the Chrysanthemum Festival (of September 9th), Toshinaga sent a messenger to his mother, Hoshun-In, to ask about her health. The letter is addressed to Chiyo, Toshinaga's younger sister, as was customary in those days.
