Kinoshita Choshoshi (1569-1649) was the eldest son of Kinoshita Iesada (1543-1608), who was the older brother of Lady One, Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s legal wife. Since very young, Chochoshi served Hideyoshi and took part in this military lord’s campaigns against Odawara Castle and invasion into the Korean Peninsula. In 1594, he was appointed Lord of Obama Castle in Wakasa Province (today’s Fukui Prefecture). However, during the Battle of Sekigahara, he abandoned the defense of Fushimi Castle, which he was entrusted with, when attacked by the Western Forces led by Lord Ishida Mitsunari.Because of cowardice, Choshoshi’s estate was confiscated, and he turned to Buddhism and retirement at a sanctuary in Higashiyama, east of Kyoto. It was after this retirement that he adopted the name “Choshoshi” and devoted the rest of his life to artistic and literary pursuits. He was skilled in composing waka (Japanese poetry of 31 syllables) and associated indiscriminately with nobility, samurai warriors and townspeople. In fact, he ascended the literary worldto the very top, sharing popularity and authority with Matsunaga Teikoku (1571-1653), and left behind collections of poems, such as Kyohaku-Shu.Choshoshi is quite apologetic in this letter. He was asked to lend the addressee a transcription of Goshui Wakashu(Later Collection of Gleanings of Japanese Poetry) but is late in doing so because he hasn’t had a copy for some time. He writes that he is going to send a copy of the requested anthology with this letter, which is addressed to “Major Counselor.” The office of Major Counselor was held by Karasumaru Mitsuhiro (1579-1638) and Nakanoin Michimura (1588-1653), but the true addressee is not known.Choshoshi confesses that he is not feeling well because of old age and sickness, so this letter was written in his very last years. The hand also shows sign of the writer’s failing health.
