A celebrated calligrapher of the early Edo Period, Araki Sohaku (1600-85) was greatly influenced by his lord, Karasumaru Mitsuhiro (1579-1638), under whom he served as vassal. He originally practiced Daishi School calligraphy (originated by the Reverend Kobo Daishi Kukai), but was gradually attracted to the classical style of the Heian Period, some six centuries earlier. Sohaku spent years hand-copying this period’s calligraphic masterpieces and was later hailed as the reviver of the style. The letter exhibited here makes reference to the Houn-In Estate, which housed a Zen sub-temple located near the famous Ninnaji Temple in northern Kyoto. It was a family temple for the Karasumaru clan. Obviously there had been trouble concerning the ownership of this sub-temple’s estate and the letter’s addressee must have helped Sohaku in resolving the dispute, as he is grateful. From the letter’s date, April of a leap year, one can conclude that it was written on April 29, 1626. Sohaku was 27 at the time
