The Rinzai Sect Zen priest of Daitokuji Temple Daiko Sogen (1772-1860) lived during the mid-Edo Period. He succeeded the 409th bishop of Daitokuji, Yukoku Sotsu (1747-1805), and became the 435th bishop of the said temple in 1820. He was drawn to brushworks in writing and painting and was also thoroughly trained in chanoyu. His close friends included Kyukosai Sosa (1818-60, head master of the Omote Senke tea family) as well as Gengensai Soshitsu (1812-77, head master of the Ura Senke tea family).Priest Daiko writes to the addressee (identity unknown) that he has heard of his illness from a visiting friend, Mitani Kichizayemon. He then adds that his own health is also deteriorating and apologizes for not writing sooner as he has been extremely busy. He goes on to thank the addressee for the gift of shredded seaweed (a seasoning) and then reports that the tea scoop that Mr. Mitani asked to be made is not done. Daiko had commissioned Komazawa Risai, a utensil maker supplying the Sen families, to make the requested scoop, but the work was delayed. Daiko promises to deliver the scoop as soon as it is made.Priest Daiko’s writing is characterized by low-rising and somewhat flattened letters. The brush strokes flow in a natural manner, and this simplicity adds a special taste to the script.
