The second son of Asano Nagamasa (1544-1611), the Lord of Aki Province, Hiroshima, Asano Naga-akira (1586-1632) was a military general during the early Edo Period. He closely served Toyotomi Hideyoshi, but after this generalissimo’s demise, he became Tokugawa Ieyasu’s retainer. When his elder brother Yoshinaga (1576-1613) died, Naga-akir became Lord of Wakayama Castle. The general went on to fight spectacularly during the Winter and Summer Battles of Osaka and later married Tokugawa Ieyasu’s third daughter, Princess Furi (1580-1617), in 1616. In the same year, the couple moved into Aki Hiroshima Castle, bringing prosperity to that province. This letter is addressed to Prince Toshihito (1579-1629), through Ikushima Hidemori (1568-1640), the prince’s steward. Naga-akira thanks the prince for the courteous reception and feast he received during a recent visit.
