Prince Songo (1302-59) was Emperor Fushimi (1265-1317)’s son and was only four years younger than Prince Son-en (1298-1356). At first, he went up to live in Byodo-In Temple and entered the priesthood in 1313, whereupon his name was changed to Songo and he started to live in Enman-In. Later, he was three times appointed head priest of Onjoji Temple and then the chief of the Three Sacred Mountains of Kumano. After that, he became the steward at Tennoji Temple (1356), where he was an active scholar-priest. Prince Songo died in 1359 at the age of 58.The letter discusses the putting of calligraphy on shikishi (decorated Japanese paper) to paste on paper folding screens. The draft sent by the client shows the characters on the shikishi paper neatly arranged. Songo in his letter asks if he can “scatter the characters here and there in the latest fashion of brush-ink calligraphy.” The addressee’s name is omitted and the letter ends with “Reply in awe,” following the tradition where the writer deliberately omits the name of the higher-ranking recipient out of reverence. The closing simply means “I humbly reply to you.” Perhaps this letter was addressed to Emperor Gofushimi (1288-1336), who was Songo’s elder brother. The clear and elegant hand reminds the viewer of a female writer. The refined taste resembles that of his father, Emperor Fushimi.
