Gison (1601-61) was the son of Archbishop Gijin of Daijoin Temple and the grandson of the15th Ashikaga shogun, Yoshiakira (1537-97). Gison was also the imperial prince appointed to the Jisso-In sub-temple, which followed Tendai Sect Buddhism. “Jisso-In” was originally a name adopted by Archbishop Joki, who was the son of Takatsukasa Kanemoto and grandson of Regent Konoe Motomichi. Joki entered Onjoji Temple in Ohmi Province (today’s Shiga Prefecture) in March 1229 and his dwelling was also called Jisso-In. Later this sub-temple was moved to the Iwakura area of Kyoto (today’s Sakyo Ward) in the early 15th century and was sometimes called the princely temple of Iwakura thereafter. The temple burned down during the Onin-no-Ran Civil War (1467-1477), and Bishop Gison was instrumental in its resurrection, contributing greatly to the temple’s development in later years. This letter is addressed to Lady Kan Shikibu, a lady-in-waiting serving Retired Emperor Gomizunoo. Intended to reach the retired emperor through Lady Kan, the letter concerns Gison’s charge of a major event in Hataeda, near Iwakura – the retired emperor’s visit to enjoy water-foul hunting on Midoro-ga-Ike pond. Since ancient times, this pond was a favorite getaway for nobles. At time of writing, Gison was also busily dispatching instructions for the hunt to many others concerned. However, this letter is one of the very few extant authentic handwritten works by Gison and, thus, is a very valuable document.
