Born the son of Ashikaga Sadauji (1273-1331) and Kiyoko (?-1342), the daughter of Uesugi Yorishige (years of birth and death unknown), Ashikaga Takauji (1305-1358) became the first supreme commander (shogun) of the Muromachi military government. In infancy, a phonetically similar but distinctively different Kanji character was used to write his name, but after conquering the Kamakura military government, Emperor GoDaigo (1288-1339) formally recognized Takauji for his spectacular service by changing the spelling of his name. Later, however, Takauji alienated himself from the emperor and helped to enthrone Emperor Komyo (1321-80), who appointed him Seiyi-Tai-Shogun, the Great General, or Generalissimo, the supreme commander entrusted to open a military government in Muromachi, Kyoto, in 1338. In the arts, Takauji studied waka poetry under Nijo Tamesada (1293-1360) and Priest Ton-a (1289-1372). In religion, he was greatly devoted to the Reverend Muso Soseki (1275-1351), and Takauji had Tenryuji Temple erected in Kyoto. During a revolt against the Kamakura military government, Takauji asked military lords in nearby provinces to send reinforcements to his camp. The exhibited document is one such dispatch, sent from Shinomura Hachiman Shrine (Kameoka City, Kyoto), where he was camping, to Teramachi Shinjiro. The latter was the manager of an estate next to Hachiman Shrine. Obviously, Takauji is asking for reinforcements from the man who is stationed closest to him.
I am serving the royal order of Hoki Province.Collect all men under you and make haste for my camp. I implore you.Sincerely,April 27 (signed with Takauji’s seal)To Mr. Teramachi Shinjiro, Manager,
