Sohan Genho (1848-1922) was a Rinzai-Sect priest who was active from the last years of the Edo to the modern eras of Meiji and Taisho. He was originally from Komatsu in Kaga (southern Ishikawa Pref.) and started his Buddhist training at age 9. Thereafter, he sought enlightenment by studying under various Zen masters across the nation. Around 1880, he started to receive training from Kasan Zenro, the 482nd bishop of Daitokuji, to whom Sohan Genho became heir as the 486th bishop. For a short time, he lived at the Kenshoji in Kumamoto and started calling himself by the name of ‘Kensho’, but later moved to the Enfukuji and adopted the pseudonym of ‘Shoun’ (lit. ‘pines and clouds’). He undertook a renovation of the temple structures and in the process completely changed its appearance. After that, he assumed the post of chief abbot at the Daitokuji for three consecutive terms and died in 1922. He had a passion for calligraphy and was an accomplished composer of Japanese waka poems, which materialized as a collection, Dokuge Shu.The Japanese alphabet, used by many as a primer for calligraphy training since ancient times as ‘iroha-uta’, are written in large characters on the six panels of the byobu folding screen. Although the script may appear somewhat clumsy and childlike, the work emanates a simple charm that impresses the viewer. It was written when Sohan Genho was in his 60s, serving as chief abbot of the Daitokuji.
