Dapeng Zhengkun (Jp. Taiho Shokon; 1691-1774) was an Obaku-school monk who used the pseudonym of Sho-o. He was born in Quanzhou in Fujian Province. He took a tonsure at the age of 16 and became the heir to Quan Changyan (Jp. Zen Shogen) at Mount Huangbo (Jp. Obaku-Zan). In 1722 he came to visit Japan and first served at the Fukuzaiji temple in Nagasaki. In 1744, he was recommended by the Mampukuji temple in Uji, Kyoto, to become the 15th bishop of the said temple. Four years later, he retired to live in the Hoju-An in the precinct of the Kaigenji temple, but returned to Mampukuji in 1758, and was once again appointed as the head priest, this time the 18th bishop. He retired from service at the Mampukuji in 1765. The single-line of calligraphy depicts an early spring with plum blossoms in bloom. The free-flowing strokes are evidence of Taiho Shokon’s mastery of the Ming-style of calligraphy.
