Kegonkyo (Avatamsaka; Ch. Huayan Jin) Sutra was translated into Chinese from Sanskrit by Buddhabhadra (Jp: Budda Batsudara) of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (China). The exhibited dark-blue scroll with silver script shows a segment from Volume 43 copied during the Nara Period (8th c.) for dedication to Todaiji Temple, the headquarters of the Kegon Sect. Around the year 740, priests at this temple began using ancient manuscripts for incantations during the spring Shuni-E ritual held at Nigatsu-Do Hall. (This ceremony is known as Omizu-Tori or Water-Drawing.) However, the fire that erupted on February 14, 1667 (Edo Period) burned down the Nigatsu-Do, engulfing the sutra box that housed the “Kegonkyo Sutra (Avatamsaka) in Silver Letters on Dark-blue Paper”. Located before a Buddha statue, the box kept the manuscript scroll from total destruction, but both the top and bottom margins were scorched. Thereafter, the sutra copy came to be known as the “Scorched Sutra of Nigatsu-Do Hall.”(Jp. Nigatsu-Do Yakegyo)From the neatly aligned, formal writing style, it is obvious that the sutra was transcribed by highly achieved calligraphers of the day, and the fire that scorched this precious copy fails to diminish its brilliance. In addition to the two volumes of Kegonkyo Sutra copies preserved at Todaiji, segments decorated as handscrolls and hanging scrolls have been handed down in various families, but being the only sutra copy written in silver ink on dark-blue paper during the Nara Period, the exhibited sutra is priceless in value.
