Sutra (Buddhist Scriptures) tell that the world enters the period of mappo (end of the Buddha Law) after 2000 years following the death of the Buddha Shaka (Sakyamuni), the founder of Buddhism. The mappo concept inspired spread of jodo faith that belief in the Buddha Amida (Amitabha) would promise happy rebirth in the jodo (Pure Land or Paradaise) of Amida. Temples dedicated to Amida were built one after another. Famous as examples surviving from the Heian Period are the Phoenix Hall or the Byodo-in at Uji in Kyoto, the Golden Hall of the Chusonji at Hiraizumi, the Amida-do at Shiramizu, and Fuki-dera in Oita, all built during the eleventh to twelfth centuries.
