Devout Buddhists believe that they have to wait for 5,670 million years for the return of Maitreya Bodhisattva (Jp: Miroku; Future Buddha) to this world, after the death of the Buddha (Jp: Shaka). During this long void, Jizo Bosatsu (Sk: Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva) is believed to appear to bring Buddhist salvation. In Japan, 1052 was widely feared to be the end of days when Buddhist laws (the Latter Dharma) would cease to emanate throughout the world. In growing fear of the nearing doomsday, people resorted to worshipping the Jizo Bosatsu. This statue stands on a lotus base and holds a sacred ball in his left hand and a pilgrim’s staff in his right hand. Depicted as a monk, his head is shaven and he dons a monk’s cloak made of patched-up tatters. A look of great solace exists in the half-closed slender eyes, expressing merciful benevolence.
