Zhejian Ruying (Jp. Setto Nyoen, 1151-1225) was a Chinese priest of the Dahui lineage of the Linji (Jp. Rinzai) sect Zen Buddhism during the Southern Song Dynasty. He was the heir to Fozhao Deguang (Jp. Setsuan Tokko; 1121-1203) of Mt. Ayuwan (Ayuwangshan; Jp. Aikuouzan), the fifth largest of the Five Sacred Chinese Zen Buddhist Mountains. Later, by imperial order, Zhejian became the chief priest of the Wanshou Monastery at Mt. Jing (Jingshan; Jp. Kinzan) and the name of Foxin Chanshi (Jp. Busshin Zenji) was bestowed upon him. The Reverend Dogen of the Eiheiji Temple first trained under Zhejian after visiting the Song Dynasty China. The Indian ink brush writings by Zhejian were later acclaimed by Xiaoyin Dasu (Jp. Shoin Daikin) of Yuan China to be ‘comparable to the works of the Two Wangs’ (Wan Xizhi and his son, Wang Xianzhi. Both are famous ancient Chinese calligraphers of the Eastern Jin Period). Writing in the dignified, traditional style, Zhejian made a name as a highly achieved calligrapher in the world of Zen Buddhism of the Southern Song era.The Buddhist verse ‘ge’ (Ch. jie), also called ‘shige’ or ‘geju’, consists of a series of rhymed four phrases to form a verse to describe Buddhist teachings. Zhejian’s verse seen here is formed in the style of seven-character-regulated-poem and likely to refer to this highly acclaimed priest’s way of life. With only a few other surviving brush-ink works by Zhejian, this hanging scroll has unmatched value.
