Gukyoku Reisai (1370-1452) was the priest of the Shoichi lineage of the Rinzai Zen sect during the Muromachi Period. He was also known by other pseudonyms such as Sokei and Fugetsu Shujin. He was originally from Yamashiro (today’s Kyoto). After serving at various temples including the Fumonji, Nanzenji and Tofukuji, Gukyoku retired and died at the age of 83. With his close friend the Priest Zuikei Shuho (1391-1473) of the Sokokuji, the author of the Gaun Nikken Roku, Gukyoku would often engage in discussions about the anecdotes found in supplementary Buddhist literature. An accomplished calligrapher, he left quite a few poetic inscriptions with paintings. Horizontal boards (hengaku) or plaques inscribed by Gukyoku were much sought-after pieces due to their alleged power to ward off fires. This byobu folding screen with poems shows Gukyoku’s extraordinary talent as a calligrapher. ‘Tokuzan’ in the second line refers to Deshan Xuanji (Teshan Hsuanchien; Jp. Tokuzan Senkan), the Rinzai-sect priest of the Tang Dynasty, and ‘Rinzai’, to Linji Yixuan (Linchi I-hsuan; Jp. Rinzai Gigen), the originator of the Rinzai Sect of Buddhism. In training his disciples, Deshan liberally dealt them slaps with a stick, while Linji shouted at them to arouse attention. The rigorous training is expressed by the characters in the fourth line. Out of all of the surviving calligraphic works by Gukyoku Reisai, this poem of large characters is a rare legacy, which has been handed down through the family of the Viscount Doi. Note that five pieces of paper are pasted together to form each panel as paper of this size would have been hard to find.
