A segment of the Senzai Wakashu (Anthology of Japanese Poems of a Thousand Years, Volume 14, ‘love songs’) written on raw paper. The presumed writer is the poet-priest and Ying Yang master (onmyo-ji), Jakue of the Kamakura Period. Compared with the Iwami-gire and Jakue Version of the Collection of Ancient and Modern Poems authentically executed by the Priest Jakue, the handwriting observed here quite resembles this priest’s style, but one cannot absolutely verify its authenticity. However, the style reveals that it was handwritten around the mid-13th century, at the time of Jakue. The thick and bold strokes with free use of the side of the brush create a characteristically dynamic, liberal flow. It exemplifies a style of kana writing found in contemporary Kamakura.
