Sought-after objects since the Later Han Dynasty, mirrors bearing the four divine creatures (the Blue Dragon, White Tiger, Red Phoenix, and Black Tortoise) were continuously made during the Sui Dynasty. Han mirrors often depict various other lucky animals along with the sacred four in a single design, but Sui mirrors are different in the sense that they have only the four divine creatures, arranged in the four directions. The inscriptions engraved in the square around the knob in Han mirrors were usually put in the outer band of Sui mirrors. Apart from the four-divine-creature motif, one can also find zodiac motifs decorating some mirrors. Sometimes the motifs of these differing mirror designs were combined to produce mirrors with the four-divine-creature motif in the inner band and the zodiac in the outer band. In fact, this combined style became quite popular.
