One of the plants most representative of the Kamakura Period is the peony. Although some earlier motifs show peony-like designs, they are really stylized flowers of good fortune around which honeysuckle arabesque motifs are often intertwined. The detailed and realistic depictions of the Kamakura Period, of the leaves in particular, show that the peony had established its own status as a favored plant motif. In some mirrors, the peony is depicted with two lions, opposed to each other, a practice said to have derived from Buddhism or the influence of Persia. The peony-and-lion motif was particularly favored on the armor of Kamakura warriors.
