The prominent design on this die resembles the Chinese character denoting “mountain.” Earlier patterns appeared during the late Spring and Autumn Period, and use of the mountain-character motif became fashionable during the beginning and middle of the Period of Warring States. The mountain-character design is often described as the “Letter T” design in art books, but the former term is used more commonly in China, even though it is likely that the character denoted something different, not necessarily a mountain, when this design was popular. Depending on the number of mountains appearing on each mirror, some are called tri-mount motif mirrors, while others are called pent-mount motif mirrors. The most prevalent types are those decorated with four mountains.
