A segment of the 9th imperially commissioned anthology, New Imperially Compiled Poetic Anthology, from the Kamakura Period. This 20-volume anthology was compiled by commission from Emperor GoHorikawa (1212-34) and compiled by Fujiwara-no-Sadaie (1162-1241). In 1235, the then 74-year-old Sadaie submitted the clean copy created by Sesonji Yukiyoshi (1179-?) and the draft he had created himself to the Regent Kujo Michiie(1193-1252). So this year marks the actual completion of the said anthology. This ‘Iga-gire’ segment has been attributed to Ogura Sanena (1315-1405), but this attribution is merely made by the Kohitsu family. Where the segment’s name derives from is unknown. The unbroken beauty and freestyle turns have resulted in an exquisite masterpiece of calligraphy. The style suggests that the manuscript was made during the early 14th century, toward the end of the Kamakura Period.
