This is a segment of Volume 14 of the Gyokuyo Wakashu (Gyokuyo Poetic Anthology), which was originally a part of a manuscript on a handscroll. Considering the fact that the majority of imperially commissioned poetry compilations during the Kamakura Period and thereafter were book-bound editions, this segment is a rare piece handwritten on a handscroll. The Gyokuyo Wakashu (Gyokuyo Poetic Anthology) was completed around 1313, being edited by Kyogoku Tamekane (1254-1332) upon direct order from the Emperor Fushimi (1265-1317). It is the 14th imperial anthology and among the 21 imperial anthologies, it is the largest containing the greatest number of poems. The segment is attributed to the hand of Kyogoku Tamekane; however, it was most likely written by someone else because of the differences detectable from the authentic handwritings on waka kaishi (paper for writing poems) and Tamekane’s letters. The neatly arranged script and elegant style closely resemble the styles of the Emperors Fushimi and Gofushimi (1288-1336), the most accomplished calligraphers of the time. Therefore, it could have been written by someone of noble birth, soon after the completion of the Gyokuyo Wakashu (Gyokuyo Poetic Anthology). Other segments from the same original have not been preserved, so this segment is important in the research of literary history in Japan.
