This painting depicts a scene from ‘The Lesser Admonition,’ part of Chapter 2 of The Tale of the Heike. After the Hōgen (1156) and Heiji (1160) Rebellions, TAIRA no Kiyomori (1118–81) and his clan grew in power and became a threat to the retired Emperor Go-shirakawa (1127–92) and the nobles on his side. A plot to overthrow Kiyomori and the Taira clan was devised at Shishigatani in 1177, but the conspiracy failed and one of its ringleaders, the nobleman FUJIWARA no Narichika (1138–77), was captured at the Nishi-Hachijō Residence. TAIRA no Shigemori (1138–79), Kiyomori’s eldest son, visited the scene and advised that Narichika be exiled instead of being put to death.
In this painting, Shigemori, wearing a nobleman’s eboshi hat and an unstarched outer robe, arrives at the Nishi-Hachijō Residence. As written in The Tale of the Heike, Shigemori and his party are unarmed, but they are surrounded by Kiyomori’s warriors. To Shigemori’s left there is a warrior holding a rolled-up red flag, marking the residence as a Heike territory.
Since this painting is a fragment of a handscroll that was cut and mounted as a hanging scroll, it would be natural to assume that an original by the same artist exists. However, such a scroll has not been found to this day, and there are only a few other works in museums such as the Hayashibara Museum of Art that depict the same scene in a different way.
