藤原鎌足〈ふじわらのかまたり・614-669〉は、飛鳥時代の中央豪族で、中大兄皇子（のちの天智天皇）とともに蘇我氏を滅ぼし、大化改新を行った人物。藤原氏の祖としても知られる。鎌足は、天智天皇から、死の前日に大織冠の冠位と藤原朝臣の姓を賜った。大織冠とは、天智天皇３年制定の二十六階位の第１階にあたり、歴史上、この称号下賜の例が他にないため、後世、鎌足の異名となるに至った。鎌足は、その死後、多武峰に祀られ、藤原氏の守護神として長く崇敬をうけるが、その画像も歴代藤原氏の礼拝像として制作されたものである。本図は、御帳台に安坐し、衣冠束帯の神格化された鎌足像に描かれる。面貌を鉛白で塗り、背景は、群青・緑青などで極彩色にいろどる。藤原氏初祖として、藤原家における追善の仏事で用いられるべく成立したものであろうか。
