興福寺の僧蔵俊の画像。蔵俊〈ぞうしゅん・1104-1180〉は、平安時代末期の法相宗の学僧。若くして興福寺に入り、覚晴（興福寺37世）に師事しながら法相・唯識を学んだ。寺内でも傑出した学僧として数々の著作を残している。左大臣藤原頼長に因明を講じたことでも知られる。晩年は、元興寺別当（治承元年・1177）、権僧都（同２年）を経て、同３年５月には興福寺権別当を歴任している。みずからの修学のかたわら多くの子弟を育成、鎌倉時代初期における法相・唯識の学匠のほとんどが蔵俊の門流であったといわれる。その門弟らの奏上により建保２年〈1214〉に僧正法印大和尚位が追贈された。本幅は、その追贈の宣命を書写した色紙形３枚を上部に貼り付ける。建保２年８月13日、少納言藤原家継が勅使となって、順徳天皇の僧官追贈の宣命が奏じられたことがわかる。上畳を置いた床几の上に坐した蔵俊は、横を向き、大きく口を開いている。論義（法会において、経論の意味を明らかにするために行われた僧侶間の問答議論）に臨んで、弁舌をふるう姿を描いたものであろう。八舌僧正ともいわれた蔵俊を象徴する絵姿である。遺例少ない蔵俊画像として、その資料的価値も高い。
