Hair disheveled, bushy-bearded and shrewd-eyed, the sharp intellect and strong personality of the priest Gaofeng Yuanmiao (1238-1295) shine through in this portrait by an unknown artist. The inscription, however, is certainly that of his disciple Zhongfeng Mingben (1263-1323), the angular strokes characteristic of his idiosyncratic style, and self-evidently the reason why he became known in Japan as ‘Bamboo-leaf’ Zhongfeng. In Zen, this genre of religious portraiture was called dingxiang (Jap. Chinso or Chinzo). Dingxiang, the portraiture of venerated senior priests, was fairly common for such priests to have their portraits painted, and for these to be inscribed with eulogies. These were then given away to their disciple as testimonials of their approval and of their advanced learning.
