Initially, the Selected Poems was a long, one-volumehandscroll. The right poems are from Kinyo Wakashu (Anthology of Golden Leaves) and the left poems, from the Kokin Wakashu (Collection of Ancient and Modern Poems). From this format, one can assume that the original scroll was an ornamental edition prepared for an aristocrat comprising poems of the four seasons selected from the aforenoted imperial anthologies. The top and bottom margins of the base paper are dusted with gold and silver on which mountains and pine fields are painted to create a distant view, and boughs of pine trees are painted to create a foreground. Copper rust and mineral pigments are used for these underdrawings in the Yamato-e style, which were perhaps executed by court painters. One can imagine the paintings blended exquisitely with calligraphy to attain synergic esthetic effect in the original handscroll. With heavy and powerful strokes while being graceful, the calligraphy style is characteristic of that of the Gokyogoku School (initiated by Gokyogoku Yoshitsune, 1169-1206), with enthusiastic devotees from the early Kamakura aristocracy. The exquisitely positioned gold foils on the paper and underdrawings suggest that this detached segment dates back to the Kamakura Period in the early 13th century.
