This segment was a part of the Ise Shu, or the Collection of Ise Poems, belonging to the Honganji Anthology of Thirty-Six Poets, the 39 detchoso-style books of pasted paper-leaves presented to the court during the time of the Retired Emperor Shirakawa (1053-1129) by 20 master calligraphers of the time, around 1112. When the original bound book was sectioned in 1929, Masuda Takashi (also Don-oh; 1848-1938) named this fragment to be ‘Ishiyama-gire’, after the fact that the Honganji Temple was located in Ishiyama, Osaka (near the present-day Osaka Castle) when Emperor Gonara (1496-1557) awarded the Anthology of Thirty-Six Poets to the 10th bishop of the Honganji Temple, Priest Syonyo(1516-54).A lady of the court Ise (dates of birth and death unknown) was the daughter of Fujiwara-no-Tsugukage, the Lord of Ise (today Mie prefecture). She was one of the 36 immortal masters of Japanese poetry. The poem in this Honganji Version of the Collection of Ise’s Poems are variants, thus this segment is a valuable piece in literary research. Although this segment is known to be written by Fujiwara-no-Kinto (966-1041), the actual calligrapher has not been identified. While every page of the Ishiyama-gire is highly stylized, the piece shown here is particularly beautiful with its meticulous painting of small motifs like plum blossoms, pine branches, butterflies and birds, incorporating gold and silver paint in the paper undercoat, resulting in an exquisite harmony with the free-flowing strokes of the cursive kana syllables. The calligraphy dates back to the early 12th century.

Few would disagree that the most splendid set of booklets in Japan is the Nishi-Honganji Temple Collection of Thirty-Six Anthologies (Nishi Honganji-bon sanjūrokunin kashū), a designated National Treasure. This set of booklets, in which accomplished calligraphers displayed their skills on lavishly decorated paper, is thought to have been produced on the 60th birthday of Emperor Shirakawa in the third year of the Ten’ei era (1112). In 1929, the second volume of the Collected Poems of Ki no Tsurayuki and Collected Poems of Lady Ise were separated from the rest, and ended up in various collections as Ishiyama and Honganji Temple Fragments. Among the large body of extant early calligraphy, in particular the parts that are sumptuously adorned of these fragments are among the finest works of Japanese calligraphy, and they have been designated Important Cultural Properties. This fragment is inscribed with part of the private anthology of one of the leading female poets of the Heian period (794–1185): Lady Ise (possibly 875–938). The paper is coated with white pigment made from pulverized high-quality oyster shells (gofun) and decorated with underpaintings of birds and autumn leaves in silver paint. While the second volume of the Collected Poems of Ki no Tsurayuki has been attributed to FUJIWARA no Sadanobu (born 1088), the calligrapher of the Collected Poems of Lady Ise has not been identified. The booklets of the Nishi-Honganji Temple Collection of Thirty-Six Anthologies were bound in the detchōsō (butterfly-bound) style which uses a lot of glue, and some residue of the glue can still be seen on the right sight of this fragment.
