阿弥陀の肉身を紅頗梨色（赤色）にあらわすところからの名称。真言宗における「紅頗梨秘法」（罪障消滅を修する法会）の本尊として尊崇され、独尊形式につくられる。阿弥陀像のなかでも異形の尊像である。８葉の白蓮華の上に五鈷杵（密教法具のひとつ）を横たえて、その上に垂直に独鈷杵を立て、さらにその上に置かれた紅蓮華座に右足を上にして結跏趺坐する。大月輪の中、二重円相光を背にして、金剛界五仏を配した宝冠をかぶり、仏身・衲衣とも紅頗梨の光を放ち、腹前で阿弥陀の定印を結ぶ姿に描かれる。本図は、上方に６角の天蓋が描かれており、紅頗梨阿弥陀像の遺品のなかでも珍しい作例である。細密な描線、しかも截金を駆使した荘厳、ひときわ華麗さを誇る作品である。
