Manjusri Bodhisattva (Jp. Monju Bosatsu) was worshipped deeply for its wisdom. Since ancient times, Manjusri and samantabdhadra(Jp. Fugen Bosatsu) Bodhisattva images and sculptures were made mostly in triads to accompany the central Buddha figure. They were also produced as singular images as the target of worship. In popular forms, the Bodhisattva is depicted with knotted hair, wearing bracelets, armbands and other accessories, with a loosely flowing drape across a shoulder. Typically, he holds a sacred sword in his right hand, a symbol of wisdom, and a lotus flower with a Buddhist scripture on top in his left hand. It often sits on a lotus podium placed on a lion’s back, his legs crossed in a Zen or Yoga-style posture. The lion, the king of beasts, shows Manjusri’s emanating wisdom. Bodhisattva’s face is often that of an infant, symbolizing the innocent purity of wisdom. The exhibited image shows a Five-knot Monju seated on a lotus podium with the lion’s paws resting on four small clouds. In Esoteric Buddhism, Bodhisattva is often depicted as the central image, reciting Buddhist prayers for peace and security of family members and relatives. Often the lotus seat and the double halos were decorated in kirikane (thin strips of metal, usually gold or silver, pasted to make lines, designs, etc.). The delicate features blend well with the rigor and power represented in this work of art, which is typical of the Kamakura Period.
