Tsuda Shigetsugu is not known, but attirbuted to Tsuda Bensaku (years of birth and death unknown). He was a samurai in the service of the Ogasawara household. Neither his place of birth nor his dates are known. Bensaku is the name by which he was popularly known, but his real names were Yoshiharu. He studied calligraphy in the Konoe school under Konoe Nobutada (1565-1614), completely mastering all its essential elements. The Konoe school flourished for another hundred years after the death of Nobutada. Nobutada’s adopted heir, Konoe Nobuhiro was one of the famous names to emerge along with Waku Hanzaemon (1578-1636), and Tsuda Bensaku was ranked with them. This “Gunnery” shows the style of Konoe school calligraphy.
